Commissioner Roy Brooks and State Representative Lon Burnam to speak at the Tarrant County Young Democrats Monthly Meeting.

The Tarrant County Young Democrats are pleased to announce that they will have Commissioner Roy Brooks and State Representative Lon Burnam as their guest speakers at the meeting. Commissioner Brooks currently represents Precinct #1 on the Tarrant County Commissioners Court. Commissioner Brooks was first elected in 2004 and received over 55% of the vote. He was unopposed when he won re-election in 2008. Before serving on the Commissioners Court, Commissioner Brooks served three terms on the Forest Hill City Council. He is also a former President of the National Association of Black County Officials, which consists of appointed and elected African American county officials from around the country.

State Representative Lon Burnam represents District 90, which includes the areas of Como, Riverside, and the Hemphill Corridor in Fort Worth. He was first elected in 1996 and is running for re-election again this year. Representative Burnam will be speaking about the documentary “Gasland” which will be premiering on HBO later this month. The movie is about a documentary filmmaker who goes to 24 states to see what effects natural gas drilling has had on them.

A Message from the Chris Turner Campaign

As summer quickly approaches, our campaign is moving into high gear. With Election Day less than six months away, we’ve put together a grassroots campaign plan that will engage voters in every corner of our district.

Because of the huge success of the last campaign’s Mega Walks, we’re bringing them back!  During our Mega Walks in 2008, over 200 volunteers helped the campaign knock on over 12,000 doors!

If you didn’t get to participate in a Mega Walk in 2008, here’s how it works:

We focus our volunteer efforts on one Saturday a month and by having dozens of volunteers knocking on doors at the same time, we cover a lot of territory and make a huge impact.  On Saturday, July 10th, volunteers will hit the streets again to talk to voters about our campaign for the second Mega Walk of 2010.

So what are you waiting for?  Mark your calendar for all the walk dates: July 10th, August 7th, September 11th and October 2nd and sign up for the July 10th Mega Walk.

Bill White for Governor

This week, Bill White released all tax returns for his years in elected office and called on career politician Rick Perry to stop stonewalling and agree to attend debates. Not surprisingly, Perry turned to slash and burn politics and lied about Bill White’s record as a successful businessman. Our campaign will continue to aggressively push Rick Perry to debate as we move into the summer.

In order to effectively communicate our message and reach out to Texans to introduce Bill White, we need your help to reach out to your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. The best way to do this is to get involved with other supporters in your neighborhood.

Tarrant County Democratic Party Internship Program
June 1st – Aug 6th – Not too late to get on-board – Hurry!

The Tarrant County Democratic Party is currently recruiting for its 2010 Summer Field Intern Program.  This 10-week program will teach you the fundamentals of political field work. If you have always wanted to get involved in the campaign process, you think you’d like to work for a campaign one day or you are looking for a unique and fun way to spend your summer this program is for you.

You will learn how to organize and execute a canvass operation be it door to door, phone banking or a virtual phone bank. This is a hands on opportunity to be the change you seek.

• Elements of the Program:
• Door to door canvassing
• Phone Canvassing
• Virtual Field work
• Use of latest targeting techniques and tools
• Opportunity to organize and manage a canvass operation.
• Fundamentals of voter targeting
• The program begins on June 1st and runs through August 6th.

The forum will last approximately 90 minutes.A moderator panel will be present. All candidates will be given an opportunity in a fairly selected order to respond.

Students will have an opportunity to ask 3 of the issues questions of the candidates. You may submit your questions before November 11th. Please commit to being present at the forum, otherwise an alternate will be given the opportunity.

12 hours that will have a direct and potentially harmful effect on the next four years of your life.  Please consider taking off Election Day and volunteering for the full day if you have not already done so.

Learn About These Critical Roles for Victory:
• Pollworker / Election Worker / Clerk – Election Workers work at the polls on election day and during early voting to ensure voters are able to exercise their rights in an honest and well-organized manner. Tarrant County needs approximately 2,500 Election Workers for each general election.
• Poll Watcher – Candidates, political parties, and nonpartisan groups can appoint poll watchers to observe any part of the process, including: polling places, transportation of ballots, ballot counting, and the early voting ballot board. Read More…
• Poll Greeter – Remind and persuade voters coming to vote to vote straight party Democratic! (You must stay 100 feet away from the polling location)
• Canvassers
• Phone Bankers – Join us in defending our voting rights at Party Headquarters
• Drivers – We always need volunteers to get people to the polls who cannot drive themselves.

Texas CDA/Texas YDA Trip To The Battlegrounds

The Texas College Democrats and Obama for America are funding free trips for students to swing states for Election Day Weekend!

One bus is going to leave from HOUSTON and go to FLORIDA, and another is going to leave from DALLAS and go to COLORADO. All travel and housing will be free of charge! Here are the details:

WHAT: Travel for Change to Florida and Colorado!

WHEN: Buses leave Thursday night, 10/30, at 7:00 PM from Houston or Dallas. Buses return on Wednesday evening, 11/5. You will be in a swing state for the 5 most important days of the campaign.

WHEN: A bus from Houston will travel to Florida. A bus from Dallas will travel to Denver. Details for where to meet the bus TBA.

WHO: Any college student or recent alum. We have 110 spots to fill!

COST: FREE! Includes transportation and housing.

Get on the bus! And recruit friends to get on the bus too!

Send confirmed names for the bus (along with email, phone number, and what college the student attends) to tory.lauterbach@gmail.com ASAP as you get them, and you can update us as more people sign on to get on the bus.

Bus space will be guaranteed for the first 110 people who RSVP.

Campaign This Weekend! Dan Barrett Campaign

There are 12 days left before the final vote is cast to decide who will represent District 97 in the Texas State House.  We are no longer entering into the final push…..WE ARE IN IT!!! We had great success last weekend, thousands of doorhangers were placed on our supporters doors thankign them for their support and telling them where they could vote.  

This weekend kicks off our SUPER DUPER EARLY VOTING EXTRAVAGANZA! (OK…. it’s a bit of a stretch but there are a lot of volunteers opportunities out there and we have to make sure we stand out!) It will be a full weekend of dedicated voters and volunteers making a difference for our community. Record numbers of voters turned out in the first three days and this weekend will be no exception.  Let’s make sure they are OUR voters!

These final 2 weeks are a crucial time for our campaign and it is important that we connect with ALL voters and supporters before Election Day.  We have identified our supporters, now we need to make sure they get out and vote. 

We need people to:

• Put out doorhangers for our supporters
• Phonebank supporters to make sure they vote

We are working at a fast pace from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm every day at the headquarters.  If you have any free time (even if it is and hour) during the week or this Saturday and Sunday please stop by!!

Bernie Scheffler and Pete Wann have started up a local chapter of Drinking Liberally!

They meet on the last Thursday of each month at 6:30 at Buffalo Bros. on University.

We’ve had really good turnout so far. Not everyone who attends is qualified to join the Young Democrats, but it’s generally a fun bunch of folks.

We’d love to see you (and as many Young Democrats as you can bring) out there next month!
